Life in a Wheelchair is not the End of the World
If you live in a wheelchair, it can be challenging indeed. However, you have a choice to make it fun, rewarding, and productive. Life is not perfect, but you can choose to enjoy it as much as possible. If you meet a person who says that he always stays healthy from the day he was born, then you just met a miracle or a liar, although the later has much greater probability. Life in a wheelchair is something that some people need to face. Fortunately, our society has grown and become much more aware of the needs of handicapped people. If you are in a wheelchair, the view will be completely different than if you are standing on your two feet. Obviously everyone is taller than you and sometimes people do not see you and thus stumble over you. Sometimes a steep wheelchair ramp can make you really sweating and people may not be doubtful to push or do certain things for you because some people in a wheelchair want to maintain their self-esteem and independence. If you cannot afford a vehicle that has been modified to accommodate a wheelchair, normally you will need to depend on your friends or families and special public transports to travel long distance. You should consider how you can go shopping or perhaps have a little holiday on the beach or mountain. You will be glad to find out that even if you are in a wheelchair, you still can do all these things. It is understandable for able-bodied people to feel angry, frustrated, and hopeless when they experience accidents or sicknesses that make them to spend their remaining lives in wheelchairs. If they are fortunate, the condition may be only temporary. For example, a spinal cord injury may improve after some period of intense physical therapy. Normally they should avoid weight bearing on their legs during this recovery period and thus they need to be in wheelchairs. However, the bad news is that the condition can be permanent, which causes irreversible paralysis of the lower limbs. This is definitely extremely difficult news to accept, but you will only make it worse if you keep complaining. You should fight to make the best of yourself even if you are confined in a wheelchair. There are many examples of people in wheelchairs who show productive lives. They believe that physical limitation only affects their body physical characteristic and does not affect who they are as people. They fight to keep independent, both physically and financially. They keep working, have a happy family, contribute to their surrounding, and even make their country proud.
