Manual wheelchairs have existed for decades. As technology developed, wheelchairs have improved along the way as well, but manual wheelchairs still have their place in the market. Some people are traditionalist and they do not like to overuse technology. Obviously those people also see the importance of motorized or electric wheelchairs, but they feel that they do not need any of them. They are happy to use the old manual wheelchair because usually they do not want to rely on technology. They want to control the wheelchair by their own hands or perhaps with some helps of a caregiver.

The necessity of a manual wheelchair

Some people need a wheelchair only on a temporary basis. For example, an injury like a sprained ankle or a broken leg may put a person in a wheelchair for some period of time. Their body will heal after some time and they will not be paralyzed forever. If you consider this situation, you will agree that an expensive or electrical wheelchair is unnecessary. For them, a manual wheelchair is good enough, unless if they have much money to spare.

A manual wheelchair is also good in the case of emergency. You may see a woman who is going into labor will be placed in a wheelchair and hurried into her room. Obviously an electric wheelchair is unnecessary in this situation. An emergency usually has a very short period of time and manual wheelchair is the right thing to be used.

Another reason of the necessity of a manual wheelchair is cost. Electric wheelchair costs a considerably amount of money and thus some people are forced to use a manual wheelchair because they cannot afford the more sophisticated ones. Recently an electric wheelchair has become more affordable and sometimes Medicare will cover the cost, a person who is in a difficult financial condition will definitely choose the cheapest option. Some charitable organizations even provide free manual wheelchairs for people who really need them.

You should never think that every disabled person should only use a sophisticated wheelchair. Of course technology can do wonder and it will surely increase your mobility, but in general a manual wheelchair is still a good device to help many people. Actually any type of wheelchair is better than nothing for a disabled person. Many people have been blessed with this type of wheelchair since a long time ago and it still happens until now.
