How a Pet Wheelchair Can Make Your Dog Happy
Dogs, as human, can suffer injuries and a pet wheelchair can make your dog to accompany you for many years to come. There are many aspects that you should consider if you have a dog, such as healthy food, some time to walk outside with it, essential medical cares, and perhaps a good place to sleep. Unfortunately, some breeds of dogs are prone to injuries. For instance, a degenerative disk disease or DDD is common to happen in long-backed dogs like Dachshunds, Bassett Hounds, and Cocker Spaniels. You can hinder the development of DDD by prohibiting your dogs to jump off the furniture, but sometimes the condition is unavoidable. DDD normally happens due to the slow degeneration of one or more disks in the back of the dog. Daily activities or physical trauma can rupture the disks and the dog will be paralyzed below those ruptured disks. The common paralysis areas are from the neck down or the shoulders down. When this condition happens, the dog will not be able to walk, stand, or bear weights on its hind legs. When a dog experiences this problem, the first thing that the owner does is purchasing a pet wheelchair. You should understand that paralysis due to DDD needs a quick medical attention. If you wait and do not bring the dog to a veterinarian, you limit the chance of recovery. There are two things that the vet normally recommends depending on the severity of the paralysis. The first is to confine the dog into a crate and give it big doses of steroids to reduce the inflammation. The second is to do immediate surgery to mend the ruptured disks. The chances of your dog to walk normally again are not good in both cases. If both methods above fail, your vet will give you two choices. First is humane euthanasia, especially if the dog is under serious pain with no hope of recovery, and second is getting a pet wheelchair so your dog will have a long and healthy life. Unfortunately, some experts say that a pet wheelchair is not suitable for every dog. Some dogs do not want to learn how to use the wheelchair and they are scared of it. If the dogs are willing to regain their mobility, then a pet wheelchair is a good device for them. A pet wheelchair has a harness that can be secured around the chest and back of the dog. It also has two openings in the rear for the hind legs as well as two wheels in the back so the dog can glide with his front legs. After your dog gets used to it, it will be wheeling around happily. There is no problem to go outside for urinating or defecating or going on car trips with you. Your dog may even learn to sleep while the pet wheelchair is still attached. Stairs and corners may create problem as the wheel can stuck. There are many types of pet wheelchairs to accommodate your dog. A pet wheelchair can cost around $300 and one of the famous sellers is Canine Carts from Billings, Montana. You can find various products from the internet, but you should make sure that they have warranty.
