Where to Locate a Wheelchair Access

Wheelchair access is very important to increase the mobility and freedom of disabled people. Wheelchairs have undergone many changes and improvements along the years. It started from manual wheelchairs and it has developed into power wheelchairs with various capabilities so their users can be more independent and do more activities.

Unfortunately, the availability of wheelchair access is still limited. Even though wheelchair designs have developed significantly, without proper wheelchair access disabled persons cannot use the full potential of their wheelchairs. This article gives some tips that to locate wheelchair access in some daily-used areas.

Around the house

Staircase is perhaps the biggest challenge for wheelchair users. There are two ways in which you can provide wheelchair access. First, you can install an elevator big enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Second, you can install a special device to the site of the rail so you can transport the wheelchair up or down with only pressing a button. Usually people choose the second option because installing elevator in the house can be an expensive and complicated work.

The second place that you should modify is the bathroom. The door should be enough for wheelchair access and you should install special rails next to the toilet and the bathtub, which can be a great help for wheelchair users.

The bathroom is the nest place you must modify for wheelchair access from the door to the special rails needed next to the toilette and the bathtub; these too can be done with ease but will be of great assistance for the one who is using the wheelchair.

Outside the house

Wheelchair access is a requirement in all American cities. The sidewalks must be leveled on each side while supermarket and department stores must provide wheelchair access from parking area to aisles to cash registers. A wheelchair ramp must be available in public buildings that use staircases to access.

Wheelchair access is not available

Unfortunately not all places have a wheelchair access and if you need to go to one of those places, then the best way to do it is to request for assistance. If feasible, you can inform the place in advance that you are coming and you need assistance to access the place. We are living in a world that can be considered wheelchair friendly. Most people are glad to give you some help or give you direction about wheelchair access.
