Wheelchair Sports are Great Competition Opportunities for Disabled Individuals

Everyone deserves to enjoy playing sports even if they have disabilities so this is the reason why wheelchair sports are invented. These sports have become very popular today. They are intended for people who are physically disabled as well as for people who are affected because of their intellectual disability. Of course the regulations have been modified from the original sports to accommodate the limitations of the wheelchair bound players.

Wheelchair sports are also called adapted sports because they are actually adaptation from normal sports. These sports are not new because they have gained popularity for some decades. You know about Olympics for able-bodied individuals to compete in various sport competitions. Disabled individuals also have this kind of competition and it is called Paralympics. Wheelchair sports are parts of this international competition.

As the time moves, new wheelchair sports are introduced. Some of these new sports are not adapted, but they are created specifically for people who are confined in wheelchairs.

Common wheelchair sports

There are many types of wheelchair sports and the most common ones are racing, table tennis, tennis, badminton, and basketball. Paralympics are the international level where these games are played by people around the world. They are governed by the International Paralympics Committee and many other sport organizations. Nowadays, Paralympics Games are held in the same country as the Olympics. The competitions also attract media attentions and are broadcasted live around the world, especially for the participating countries.

Today, bowling, hockey, football, and baseball have been added to wheelchair sports. However, these sports normally use electric wheelchairs because they can be quite vigorous. This is the reason why these wheelchair sports have the term electric before the name, for instance is electric wheelchair hockey. For sports that involve much running around, it can be quite difficult for wheelchair bound people to constantly move around manually.

You should understand that the electric wheelchair used in wheelchair sports is different from the regular wheelchair. It has been designed to have higher speeds, sometimes more than 15 mph. This is because movement is important in playing sports and thus the wheelchair should be flexible, easy to be maneuvered, responsive, while maintaining its strength.

You will surprise that now there are some people who are interested into extreme wheelchair sports. These sports are very dangerous and can involve hurtle down a mountain in a very high speed or even jump out of a plane. Even able-bodied individuals may not be able to do this kind of sports.
