Necessary Modifications for Wheelchair Vans

There are many types of wheelchair vans that you can choose. Basically these vans are modified from the original design to provide access for people who are confined in wheelchairs. The modifications normally involved lowering the floors and adding ramps so the wheelchairs can be rolled into the van easily. Another modification is the addition of a power lift to carry the wheelchair from ground level to the level of the van.

It is not that easy to modify a van into a wheelchair van. There are various processes that should be done carefully because if it is fail, the van may become useless. There are several steps to do this modification and each manufacturer usually has its own unique steps. In general, they involve removing the floor, adjusting the front seat to allow access for a wheelchair, adding a ramp or a lift, modifying the suspension to receive extra load from the wheelchair (especially electric wheelchair), changing the gas tank as required, and in the end testing the van to make sure that everything is in order.

Wheelchair vans can be quite costly. The cost depends on the cost of the vehicle itself and the cost of the conversion. Vans that are often to be used as wheelchair vans are Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town and County, Ford Windstar, Chevy Uplander, and Toyota Sienna.

An important factor in choosing a wheelchair van is the dealer selection. The dealer should have proper certifications, such as a crash test and other required tests. You should ask about the warranty and the serviceability in case if you need to get it serviced. You may want to go to your local dealers to find more information about types of wheelchair vans that are available. The internet is another good source to get quick information, such as availability and prices.

Common conversions of wheelchair vans are AMS van conversion, Entervan conversion, and Vantage Mobility conversion. These conversions involved lowering the floor to the front firewall, which purpose is to get more head room and provide a natural line of sight for the wheelchair users. The van also kneels to the ground so it has a slight angle for entry. In addition, it has a power passenger electric door and a ramp that sometimes can be operated with a remote for easy access to get in and get out of the van. Another addition is easy out seats in the front so the wheelchair can be positioned in the front part of the wheelchair vans.
